I’ve read reviews of the backboard shattering, and can pinpoint it down to installation error.

If the bolts aren’t torqued down properly and get loose, the the metal washers that go through the glass backboard will likely start rubbing or chipping the glass hole edges. Most people are aware that tempered glass is extremely durable unless there is small impact at it weak points which are usually side edges.

Therefore, I would suggest making sure the washers aren’t touching the glass, use thread lock on the bolts and then torque down and it will not likely shift.

Used with existing steel pole.

I used an existing steel pole with this setup. The diameter was 4.5 vs 4 inches, I purchased slightly larger bolts and I’m very happy with the installation.

IF installed correctly (not using the plastic sleeve) it’s one of the best mid-range systems

PROS: direct bury (pole goes directly into the concrete) is sturdy AND if you fill the pole with concrete up to the arm holes it’ll last forever. Inground hoops are permanent. to be thicker/ heavier gauge steel so more expensive. A bag of concrete is around $5.
The crank mechanism is on the front with Nothing on the back. You could install right up against a fence or wall.

Here are three things you should do: The rim bolts are too long for your average 1/2” deep socket and it’s hard to get a wrench on the nut to tighten them enough. Replace them with four shorter ones if you have them laying around. Second, USE LOCK NUTS! Glass backboards break from loose rims. Replace the four nuts with lock nuts or add the lock nuts on top of the others. Third, the crank actuator - it easily taken apart with one little bolt holding the crank-hook to the shaft. Remove the bolt and pull the actuator apart remembering where the washers/spacers go and GREASE THE ACME ROD threads with your favorite weather proof grease and put it back together. It will crank up and down way easier. They don’t put enough grease on there or it melts off over time.
Doing these few things has kept me from returning to customer’s homes for repairs. I have been installing this exact Spalding Hoop since 1994. Read Less

backboard problems

We too had a shattered backboard with normal use. I've submitted a claim and we will see what happens. I've tried to search for a replacement as well and the models have changed so much it's hard to find a direct replacement. Hopefully Spalding will either replace or let me know what the direct replacement product is for a back board.

Good and bad but keep your receipt!

backboard popped and cracked into a million pieces. The handle to raise and lower is not very easy and would be difficult or even impossible for a shorter weaker person to do. I will say the customer support has been great and very helpful in getting me a replacement I just wish the backboard were more durable. Read Less

Hard to adjust

Overall - not a good system. Mine is buried and filled with concrete, so it’s absolutely sturdy. However, the U-turn system is too hard, and arguably impossible for pre-teen kids to use. It’s even hard for me to make adjustments. The older models with the push and pull adjustment lever in the back were much better.

Q: Does this setup include the pole and what are the dimensions of the pole? So I know what size hole to dig. Also, I seen someone asked about the installation (setting the pole in the ground was included in the installation) the response was to click the installation option. I cannot find that option anywhere. Please advise.

Q: Hi there. I posted this question on the Canadian Tire website as well but not sure if it went through.

I’m having a very hard time fitting the poles in together. I’ve been bouncing the top pole over the bottom pole as instructed, but it seems to have stopped after dropping a couple of inches. I can’t seem to get it to drop any further. Any suggestions?

A: Hi Zayn - Great question. We have a couple of quick suggestions I can share. First, you'll want to ensure you are bouncing the poles a foot off your block of wood. If you are doing that and still don't have any luck, you can sand the paint finish off the inside and outside and use a thin piece of like plywood or OSB instead of the traditional 2X4. Q: Hi, I’ve read a lot of reviews for this hoop and many have talked about the installation process and specifically the use of the ground sleeve.
1.What is the purpose and advantage of the ground sleeve?
2. Why not install directly into the concrete with out the ground sleeve? (Many reviews prefer this method for stability, less wobble)

A: Hi Elliott - Great questions. We recommend using our ground sleeve when installing our U-Turn Inground Basketball Hoop to ensure the pole is installed at the correct level to ensure you reach a maximum height of 10', along with having a stable base when installing the poles.
